USS
NEVADA SSBN 733 is a Trident Ballistic Missile Submarine homeported in Bangor, WA. TRIDENT is the Navy's third generation
fleet ballistic missile program. It is part of the Nation's strategic
deterrent triad which also includes land-based missile systems and manned
bombers. TRIDENT is named for the three-pronged spear of mythology's King
Neptune.
The
USS Nevada, one of the sister ships of the Ohio-class (TRIDENT)
submarines is one of the quietest, fastest, largest and most powerful
submarines in the world. The Ohio-class submarine offers significant
improvements and advantages over the POLARIS/POSEIDON programs in
equipment design and it represents the most modern technology in the
world.
The
reactor and propulsion plant are designed to operate more quietly over a
projected 30-year life span, thereby allowing longer periods between
overhauls. The sonar features an increased detection range and improved
analysis capability.
